Hey everyone. Sorry for the long wait. I've been working on my digital art a lot more lately and i think that it is time that i share some more stuff. I guess i have been pretty cheap with the art post so I am going to post more stuff. Old and new.

The image below was done as a warm up. When I draw, I don't always have an idea ready, so I do a warm up drawing to see what comes out. Ill do this for about 30 minutes. If nothing comes to me by then, I use photographic reference. In time an ideas come and I put them to work.

My first free hand flowers tattoo. This one was fun to do. I often draw the designs out on paper and make a stencil of my drawing, but it just seemed easier and faster to go right to the skin and work out the design there. And my sister in law sat very well for it.

For my good friend Kelly, I sketched out the design to make sure that I drew the butterflies the way she imagined them.
Once that was done, it was all up to her pain tolerance. It was not too high. Lol.
so we did it in two sessions. one for outline the other for color.

Here is some new stuff that I have done in clay.
Sculpting my characters help me better understand how light and shadow falls on the figure. It makes it easier for me to translate the information into my paintings and drawings.

Time to level up

After sculpting my little cat like character, Logo20. I felt that it was time to try something new and a bit more ambitious.
First I did a little teddy bear to warm up, using non-hardening clay.

When I was comfortable and in the flow of things, I began constructing an armature using twisty ties that came from an action figure packaging.
I had a rough Idea as to how I would like the figure to look so I just went with it.

Bit by bit things came together nicely.
I made the hair the same color as the skin just to test an idea I had for a technique.
Later I will replace the hair with black clay. That also goes for her eyebrows and lashes.
I would like to make it seem like I sculpted each strand of hair.
I still haven’t given much thought for the clothes yet but I’m pretty sure that it will be Goth, and sexy.

The idea of making designer vinyl toys is sounding sweeter everyday.
I am hoping to have at least the head done by tonight. And I will be working out some sketches to help figure out what she will be wearing.

Discarded Garden Vengeance in bloom

Inspired by the writing of my good friend Jamal W, Hankins.
I began using the silhouette technique I’ve been practicing to illustrate a rough idea I have for a poster; promoting the story that he is writing. The story has a lot of drama so it seemed only right to have the lighting illustrate the mood of gloom, and intensity.
I hope it worked.

Several weeks ago I worked on an upper back tattoo for a good friend of mine. He already had a tattoo of the Pisces symbol, which was his very first tattoo.
When he had first gotten the tattoo he was asked if he wanted the fish around it but he decided not to.
So he asked me if I could add some fish around it to upgrade the design.
It was a new challenge. How could I say no?

First I made a tracing of his back and existing tattoo so that I can get the size right.
Then I made real small thumbnail sketches to plan out a good composition. It was not as easy as I had hoped. The sketches I did looked like a basketball so I needed to find a way to avoid letting that happen.
(Sorry. I can't find those sketches. Ill make sure to keep them next time.)

Once I worked out a composition that I liked, I started working on the design at its actual size on tracing paper.

From there I darken in the final lines as if I was tattooing. It’s almost like a test run for me. Then, using color pencils I add the color.

When I had completed the drawing I let my friend see it and then the appointment was set.

The work was done in two sessions.
1.Outline and shading
2.Color

While I looked over the finished tattoo, I realized that my kung fu had become stronger.
I love my job.

From Mind to Paper to Skin.

Two nights ago I worked on a body painting on a friend of mine.
It was of a design that I had been dying to do on someone for a long time.
Often when I have a cool idea for a tattoo I draw the body part and then the design based on that part of the body, making sure that the design flows well.

Body painting allows me to test tattoo design ideas on people without the risk of it being permanent. A lot of my clients love this; it’s like trying on clothes before you buy them.

I was not able to put as much detail into the painting because it was getting late and she had a long trip home ahead of her, so I only put about 30 to 45 mins of painting into it.
I’m still happy with the results though.

The original design was a bit morbid. Instead of a woman’s face, there was a large eyeball. This is a design I will want to do again but with way more detail and depth.

Brining a drawing to life with clay

I have always wanted to get into sculpting. I just never had the time.
So when I did have the time, and the money to get everything that I needed in order to express myself, I began working on it, using sculpy polymer clay.
The whole project took me about 3 hours. The next time I sculpt, I will try not to rush so much. I’m sure I will end up with a better-finished product if I just take my time.

Its not as refined, as I wanted it to be, but it sure as hell was a good start.

When I started this I didn’t know what to say or how to say it.
I do know, however, what I want to show you.
So I think I will start with that.

Animation:
Animation is my first love. Once I found out it was hand drawn, I wanted to learn more.
My older sister was taking art classes and I learned a lot by watching her draw.

Comic Books:
My next step was to draw what I saw in comic books. Later on I learned how to draw what I saw in life.

Movies:
Kung fu films, James Bond movies, and break dancing fueled my creativity like you wouldn’t believe. They opened my mind to the possibilities of the amazing, as well as keeping me fit.

Music:
My older sister was a gymnast and ballet dancer.
She was also into popping because she was a big time Michel Jackson fan.
Whenever my sister went to ballet class or to gymnastics, she had to take me with her so I learned at an early age how demanding dance is on the body. As I sat on the floor, off to the side in the dance studio or the gymnasium, I could not help but see how much her classes were like the teachings of Kung fu from Shaolin (not to say that my sister and her class mates looked like bald men). The discipline was there. The focus was there. It was in the way they stood before their teacher; the way the teacher would walk around them looking over each student, rhythmically pounding her bamboo stick on the wooden floor.

Painting:
Learning to paint opened me up to self-expression, focus, patience, and the understanding of color. This is where a lot of my earlier techniques came together as one.

Tattoos:
This was by far one of the hardest skills for me to learn. It not only helped me understand myself, it helped me understand others. The skin is unlike paper or canvas. I learned how to finesse a pencil, I learned how to finesse a brush, and now I share my skills with others using my finesse with a dancing needle to transfer their mind’s images onto their skin.

As I grow older I learn more and became better.
Here I will share with you my understanding and growth within these arts.
I like to consider these arts my Kung Fu.
